The Service

What Is Asphalt Crack Filling, and Why Act Now?

Asphalt crack filling is the application of a hot-rubberised sealant into existing cracks in an asphalt surface. The filler is heated to a liquid state, poured or applied directly into the crack, and tooled smooth. As it cools, it bonds to the crack walls and creates a flexible, watertight seal.

The purpose is to stop water from entering through the crack and reaching the base layer beneath. When water reaches the base, it softens the sub-base material during warm weather and freezes during winter, expanding with enough force to widen the crack from below and create the structural failures that precede potholes and base collapse.

Crack filling is not cosmetic. It is structural maintenance. A crack addressed when it is narrow and shallow can be repaired for tens of dollars. The same crack left for two to three Pennsylvania winters may require a full driveway section replacement costing hundreds or thousands.

TYPES OF CRACKS

Not All Cracks Are Equal, Here's What to Look For

Hairline Cracks

Fine surface cracks, typically less than 1mm wide. Caused by early UV oxidation and surface shrinkage. At this stage, crack filling is straightforward and highly effective. Left untreated, these widen into surface cracks within 1 to 2 seasons.

[NOTE]  Urgency: LOW, address at next scheduled maintenance

Surface Cracks (1–10mm wide)

The most common type treated by R2 Sealing. Water has begun entering the crack but has not yet reached the base. Hot-rubberised filler seals the crack effectively. Sealcoating after filling extends the protection across the full surface.

[NOTE]  Urgency: MODERATE, treat within the current or next season

Edge Cracks

Cracks running along the sides of the driveway, typically caused by tree root pressure, weak sub-base at the edge, or lack of adequate border support. Can be filled if the edge structure is still sound. May indicate base issues if accompanied by settling.

[NOTE]  Urgency: MODERATE TO HIGH, R2 Sealing assesses underlying cause

Alligator Cracking

A network of interconnected cracks resembling alligator skin, a sign of base failure beneath the surface. Crack filling will not resolve alligator cracking because the problem is structural, not surface-level. This condition typically requires section removal and patching, or full driveway resurfacing.

[NOTE]  Urgency: HIGH, crack filling is NOT appropriate; requires structural repair or paving

How We Do It

The R2 Sealing Crack Repair Process

Crack Assessment

R2 Sealing inspects every crack before treatment, measuring width, depth, and checking for signs of base movement beneath. Not every crack is appropriate for filling; we identify which cracks are surface-level and which indicate structural issues that require a different approach.

Crack Cleaning & Preparation

Debris, vegetation, and loose material are removed from each crack using compressed air and wire brushing. Clean crack walls are essential for the filler to bond correctly, product applied over debris will not hold.

Hot-Rubberised Filler Application

Hot-rubberised crack filler is heated to the correct working temperature and applied directly into the crack in a controlled pour. The filler is tooled smooth and flush with the surrounding surface. The rubber compound remains flexible after curing, it expands and contracts with the asphalt through temperature changes rather than cracking itself.

Cooling & Surface Check

The filler is allowed to cool and set. The treated area is checked for any voids or low spots that require a second application. The finished result should be flush, smooth, and uniform in colour.

You Inspect, Approve, and Pay

You inspect the completed crack repair work. Payment is due only after your approval. Zero deposit was required at any stage of this process.

The Materials

Commercial-Grade SealMaster, On Every Job

R2 Sealing uses SealMaster commercial-grade asphalt sealer on every residential and commercial project. SealMaster is the largest manufacturer of pavement maintenance products in North America, the same product specification used on Pennsylvania state highway and municipal road projects.

Consumer-grade sealers available at hardware stores are water-based products that fade within one to two seasons. SealMaster bonds more deeply into the asphalt surface, provides superior UV block, resists petroleum-based fluids, and lasts 3 to 5 years under normal conditions. We apply the same commercial specification whether the job is a single residential driveway or a multi-property HOA contract.

CRACK REPAIR QUESTIONS

Common Questions About Asphalt Crack Repair in Central PA

How much does asphalt crack repair cost in Central PA?

Crack filling typically costs $0.50 to $1.50 per linear foot for standard surface cracks. The total cost depends on the number and length of cracks present. R2 Sealing often combines crack filling with sealcoating in a single visit for the most cost-effective result. Free written estimates are provided after an in-person assessment.

R2 Sealing uses hot-rubberised crack filler on every job. Hot-rubberised filler is heated to working temperature, poured directly into the crack, and tooled smooth. Unlike cold-pour consumer fillers, hot-rubberised filler bonds to the crack walls, remains flexible through temperature changes, and provides a watertight seal that lasts significantly longer.

Crack filling is most effective when cracks are addressed early, before they widen beyond 10mm or deepen to the point where base movement is occurring. The best windows in Central PA are spring (after winter freeze-thaw damage) and early fall (before the next winter cycle). R2 Sealing recommends addressing visible cracks at the first opportunity.

Consumer-grade cold-pour crack fillers are available at hardware stores and will temporarily seal minor hairline cracks. However, they do not bond as deeply as hot-rubberised filler, remain brittle in cold weather, and typically fail within one to two seasons. For any crack wider than 2–3mm, professional hot-rubberised filler is the correct product.

Crack filling seals the specific damage points but does not protect the broader surface from UV, water, and chemical deterioration. R2 Sealing recommends combining crack filling with sealcoating in the same visit, the cracks are filled first, allowed to cure, and the sealcoat is applied over the entire surface for complete protection.

Alligator cracking, a network of interconnected cracks resembling alligator skin, indicates base failure beneath the surface. Crack filling is not the right solution for alligator cracking because the problem is structural rather than surface-level. R2 Sealing will assess the extent of the damage and recommend either section patching or full driveway paving as appropriate.
